ISTANBUL, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The 22nd World Petroleum Congress, the largest gathering for the oil and gas industry, kicked off on Sunday in Istanbul with a view to addressing the challenges facing the sector. "The challenges in the petroleum sector have been growing as the world population has been increasing," Jozsef Laszlo Toth, president of the World Petroleum Council, said at the opening ceremony. In his view, meeting future energy demands in a safe and environment-friendly atmosphere will require "massive investment, technology, the highest-skilled human resources and superior ethical business practices." On the occasion, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was offered the Dewhurst Award, an honor named after the founder of the congress, for his "outstanding contribution to the oil and gas industry," as the top U.S. envoy served as ExxonMobil's chairman and CEO from 2006 to 2016. The World Petroleum Congress is organized every three years by the London-based World Petroleum Council and includes 65 member countries from around the world, representing over 96 percent of the global oil and gas production and consumption. More than 20,000 participants, including high-level executives, representatives of international organizations and government leaders from over 100 countries, are expected to be present for the five-day Istanbul congress.
